Glossary 

1. Hemisphere - Hemisphere is the half portion of the globe divided at the equator on the Prime Meridian.

e.g - 

(I)  Divided by the equator :- Northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere.

(II) Divided by the Prime Meridian or Greenwich line :- Eastern hemisphere and western hemisphere.

2. Oriental world - The countries included in the south-east,  south and East Asia are known as Oriental world.

3. Tropic of cancer - Tropic of Cancer is the imaginary parallel of latitude which is supposed to be drawn parallel to the equator, 23 degree North. It passes through the middle of our country.

4. Peninsula - The triangular land mass surrounded by the water on three sides for directions is called the peninsula.

5. Tropical zone - The region of  line between 23 degree 30 N and 23 degree 30 S latitude is called tropical zone.

6. Subtropical zone- the area of reason extending from 23 degree 30 N to  266 degree 13 N in the Northern hemisphere and from 23 degree 30 S to 256 degree 30 S in the southern hemisphere is called subtropical zone.

7. Landlocked - Landlocked is the term often used for states and countries completely surrounded by land with no coastline.

2. Answer the following questions  briefly

3. The sun rises two hours earlier in Arunachal Pradesh as compared to Gujarat in the West but watches show the same time . How does this happen?

Ans-The sun rises in the east. Hence the  time is ahead by 4 mins every Meridian while going towards east from the west. Kuchchh in Gujarat is located at 68 degree 7 and easternmost point of Arunachal Pradesh is at 97 degree 25 is the difference is of 2 hours.

But the local time of 82 degree 30 E is taken as standard time throughout the country and all the watches in the country run according to the time of 82 degree 30 East.

It is because of this reason that sun rises two hours earlier in the Eastern part of Arunachal Pradesh as compared to Kuchchh in the West but watches show the same time.

4. The Central location of India at the head of the Indian Ocean is considered of great significance. Why ?

Ans- India is situated in the Eastern hemisphere . It stands on the northern edge of the Indian Ocean . Japan in the north-east ,Australia in the Southwest ,Europe in the northwestern ,Africa and the Southwest at equal distance from India.

The trans Indian ocean routes connecting the countries of Europe in the west and the developing countries of Asia in the east provided strategic Central position to India.

Deccan Peninsula protrudes into the Indian Ocean helps India to establish close contact with west Asia ,Africa and Europe from the Western Coast and with south-eastern Asia from the eastern coast . India has the longest coastline on the Indian Ocean no other country has such  a coastline.

India has an important position in respect of international sea routes. International sea route pass through the Indian Ocean air routes touch Delhi ,Mumbai ,Chennai, Kolkata aerodromes.  They join them with other famous aerodromes of foreign countries.

1. Distinguish between local time and Standard Time.

Ans-  Local Time is the time of a longitude. Local time within the country vary  from one longitude to another . The local time of the westernmost tip and easternmost tip  of India vary by 2 hours. 

         Standard time remained the same throughout the country on all longitude.

2. Define subcontinent. Name countries which constitutes the Indian subcontinent.

Ans-  Subcontinent is a part of a continent, separated from the rest of the continent by natural features, such as mountain ,sea and  it has its own specific characteristics and distinct cultural identity. 

Countries constituting Indian subcontinent- India , Pakistan, Bangladesh ,Afghanistan, Nepal Bhutan ,Myanmar ,Sri Lanka and Maldives.

3. The Tropic of Cancer runs almost Halfway through out the country. what does this imply?

Ans- The Tropic of Cancer runs almost Halfway through India . It implies a lot. By tropic of cancer,  India is divided into two separate climatic zones while the southern part of India lie within the tropics and rationally hotter than the northern part, the latter belongs to the subtropical or the warm tropical zone of the northern hemisphere.
